Zabrecky – Our Magic Video Review

In 2024, I discovered the band Possum Dixon, and didn’t look back. I deep-dived into the 90’s alternative rockers’ catalogue, and was inspired to explore more of the lost music of that decade (and made a playlist from it). I also became intrigued by the band’s frontman Rob Zabrecky, reading his fascinating memoire Strange Cures.

While his memoire made it sound as if Zabrecky had left music behind to focus on his passion for magic, it seems he’s found a way to combine both of these loves in his latest single (under his last name) “Our Magic”. A dark, new wave tribute to the forgotten legends of the art of magic, with a mix of spoke-sung vocals and gang chanted chorus, the track almost tries to hypnotize you with its glitchy organ and transcendent bass line.

Even more mesmerizing is the video for the track. A surreal, AI-driven journey that brings these lost magicians back to life to showcase their innovative performances and prestidigitation. Mixed in are wild, steampunk-esque performance shots, wily rabbits and other absurd visuals that I won’t spoil for you.
