March is Women’s History Month, and a wonderful time to honor the women in our lives. But it’s also important to understand and remember the many painful, often traumatic experiences so many women have and continue to experience in our society.
Songwriter Taylor Bickett understands this better than most, having written her recent single “The Crime” following a traumatic event. The somber song brings to light the moments leading up to a violent assault by a man and its aftermath, and is accompanied by a powerful and moving video.
Shot in stark black & white, the video finds Bickett performing under a single lamplight, while cutting to numerous other women of all backgrounds and ages, lip syncing to the track to communicate the universal experience so many women of being the victim of a violent crime perpetrated by men. While any woman watching it will be able to empathize with the song’s story, but it’s just as important for men to view it and understand the message of the track.
With the track, Bickett has partnered with The Circle, a charity founded by Annie Lennox to prevent violence against women, and will be donating proceeds from the song to their cause. Watch the beautiful video above, and you can stream the track here.
