Music Video Review: Blow It Up – Shut Up It’s Me

Shut Up It’s Me is an ambitious project, to say the least. Five albums of material fanning five genres (Rock, Alt Rock, R&B/Hip Hop, Country and Pop), all being released simultaneously. The track that I first heard though is “Blow It Up”, the first single from Shut Up It’s Me‘s Rock Vol 1 album. And with the song, the artist (who wrote and produced all of the material on all five albums, with some help from co-writers and musicians) has also provided a wild, fun video clip to accompany the track.

About the song, SUIM’s creator Ken has said it was:

“…written as an ode to my youth. When nothing much important happened, and all you existed for was to make the powers that be cringe and want to control you.”

And you can feel that anarchic spirit in the video. Following a band of guys on tour in their van, at first you might think you’re just watching some cleverly crafted home video footage, with the occasional VHS aesthetic and slice-of-tour-life shenanigans the band gets into, while lyrics like “We’re all going to the party, we’re all gonna drink for free” infuse the images with youthful exuberance.

The wild antics take a narrative turn, when the wayward band picks up a young, female rocker hitchhiking and bring her along for their adventures. What happens next you’ll have to watch to see, but as the lyrics also take a turn (“I don’t want to go to the party”), the message that all good things eventually end comes into focus.
