Monotronic Music Video Review: Looking Away

According to guitarist/producer Ramsey Elkholy, Monotronic is a “concept”, a music project born from his desire to have every musician involved in the project bring their own creativity to create a true “collective” of music. In the case of the wonderful single “Looking Away”, that approach has led to success.

A pulsating pop rock track, energized by racing drums, stadium guitar riffs and ebullient keys, “Looking Away” will appeal to any fans of bands like modern acts like The Killers or classic American rock like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. And with the enticing video for the song, the band has drawn influences again from both those artists.

The imagery in the video of golden hour highways, picaresque mountains, and lonely deserts epitomizes the Americana that Petty drew from so well in his music. Yet, the director doesn’t just rest on these epic landscapes. He infuses a lightly surreal narrative, as Elkholy finds himself lost and searching for something on his lonely road journey, enhancing this with a variety of cinematic techniques (split screens, after-images) and cinematography flourishes that modern acts have used to give their videos a cinematic flare.
