Humanist is the brainchild of musician/producer Rob Marshall, as he collaborates with a number of singers, including Mark Lanegan, Dave Gahan (recent Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame inductees Depeche Mode), Mark Gardener (Ride), Ron Sexsmith, Joel Cadbury (UNKLE), Jim Jones (Thee Hypnotics), Carl Hancock Rux (David Holmes, Portishead) and John Robb (The Membranes). Inspired by the suicide of singer Gavin Clarke, Marshall reached out to the singers he felt would best represent the project, giving each a track title, the music – and free reign over how they chose to express themselves with those elements.
First single “Shock Collar” is a melodic, 80’s tinged rocker featuring Dave Gahan. The music video for the track is a dynamic performance piece, using quick cuts and moody red and blue lights to energize the visual while relating the darker tone of the song. Piercing moments, such as the reflection of a neon sculpture in Marshall’s eyes, hint at a more personal message in the visuals.
