Energetic Review: Judah & The Lion – Alright!

Judah & The Lion has been developing their sound ever since the release of their first album, Sweet Tennessee, in 2013. When they started on the scene, their music would definitely be categorized more so as “folk rock” than as “alternative” or “indie rock.” With the release of their 2016 album, Folk Hop n’ Roll, they dubbed themselves as “folk hop.” They kept the banjo and mandolin, but grew their style to include influences from hard rock and hip hop. Their newest album, Pep Talks, which released this year, drives more towards an alternative or indie rock sound while still remaining true to the overall sound the band has been developing over all of these years.

Out of all of their albums, Pep Talks, has the closest open connection to the bands’ personal lives, and their tour directly reflected that. Throughout their tour they shared personal stories of struggle while helping their audience also connect with the hope that being alive still brings. The album itself touches on subjects such as depression, alcoholism, divorce, loss, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and just struggling to get by through all of the hits that life throws at you – but also being able to be optimistic despite those things. The album has some of my favorite songs of 2019 on it because of how catchy they are melodically, and because of how close to home they hit at times with their lyrics and meaning.

The song featured in the new video release is one of the more hopeful tracks on the album, which delivers an overall message that no matter how hard it gets, things are going to be alright.

I don’t know why, I don’t know why
I cannot stop this feeling inside
I don’t know why, I don’t know why
I cannot stop this feeling inside
No matter how bad all this gets
I can’t stop this voice in my head
This voice in my head says

We’re gonna be alright
We’re gonna be alright
