“Get yourself a love that looks at you like lovers do in classic cartoooooons” is a pretty damn great opening line for a song, and certainly relatable to any romantic who has struggled in the dating world. That’s just one of the things that make Maumaumau‘s latest single “God Bless the Irony” such a smash. For anyone who has navigated the world of online dating (I certainly did), the track touches on the frustration, false hopes, and constant ups and downs of searching for love on your phone.
And even more brilliantly, the artist, with director Daniel Cloud Campos (Zedd, Paramore), has brought the pain (that in many ways is self-inflicted) of that world to life in his wild, hilarious new video. Talking about the ideation and creation of the video, Mau said:
“I sometimes have a hard time finding visuals that match my quirky side. I’ve been lucky to collaborate with directors who appreciate my music and bring their vision to the table, but it hasn’t always captured my whole personality. That changed when I teamed up with my best friend, Cloud Campos, an incredible creative director. We finally got the chance to dive into a music video together. We brought along a bunch of friends and brainstormed the wildest, most off-the-wall ideas we could think of and then worked through the chaos to make them happen. It’s a long story, but the context is everything! One of my favorite moments was the first big transition—when I jumped out of the room, and we had to figure out how to hurl a dummy down the hallway in a way that made sense. We weren’t sure it would work on camera, but it came together perfectly after several hilarious attempts and severe trial and error. We couldn’t stop laughing at how crazy it all was—definitely a core memory for me.”
I could say more about the video and catchy track, but it’s best if you just watch it above, and then stream it right here!
